Busan – a holiday destination in Korea, a paradise for seafood, and a city known for its film festivals. But for me, it also holds a special meaning: it’s my “healing sanctuary after sun exposure.”
Every summer, I spend a few days relaxing at Haeundae Beach in Busan, but that also means coming back with a red, sunburned face. That was until a local friend introduced me to Genius Clinic Busan – a hidden gem specializing in post-sun care and vacation skin management in the Haeundae area.

🌞 What exactly is the “after-sun emergency treatment”?
😰 What happens to our skin when we get sunburned?
After a day of intense sun exposure at the beach, your skin actually endures the following damage:
- UVB rays cause direct burns to the epidermis → redness, heat, stinging sensations (i.e., sunburn).
- UVA rays cause deeper damage to the dermis → collagen breakdown, accelerated aging.
- A large number of free radicals are produced → leading to inflammatory reactions and an increased risk of pigmentation.
- The breakdown of the sebum barrier leads to a decreased ability of the skin to retain moisture.
- The secondary damage caused by seawater and salt results in dehydration, itching, and increased sensitivity.
Therefore, post-sunburn recovery is not just about “making the redness go away” – you need to address four issues simultaneously: inflammation, dehydration, photodamage, and damaged skin barriers.
🚑 Genius’ “Three-Step Emergency Recovery Routine After Sun Exposure”
The post-sunburn recovery plan designed by Dr. Genius consists of three steps, which I call the “Emergency Recovery Routine”:
Step 1: Calming and reducing redness (about 20 minutes)
- Apply a cold compress using isotonic saline solution (not regular toner, but medical-grade saline)
- Combine this with low-intensity LED red light therapy to lower the skin’s surface temperature and suppress inflammatory factors
- Apply a soothing gel containing aloe vera, centella asiatica, and vitamin B5
The goal of this step is to “put out the fire” – to calm down your skin from its “inflamed state”. After completing this step, the redness and discomfort usually decrease by more than 50%.
Step 2: Deep Hydration + Repair (about 25 minutes)
- The iontophoresis device delivers reparative ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and panthenol (B5) directly into the dermis.
- Medically grade, high-concentration solutions are used—not the diluted essences commonly found on the market.
- Combined with a cold spray, this step continuously replenishes moisture into the skin.
The goal of this step is to restore the skin’s ability to retain water. Saltwater and sunlight dehydrate the skin severely; this step is about “replenishing” that lost moisture.
Step 3: Barrier Restoration + Protection (about 15 minutes)
- Apply a thick layer of repair cream containing ceramide complexes.
- Use physical sun protection—non-irritating formulas based mainly on zinc oxide. Note: Chemical sunscreens should not be used after sunburn!
- Oral antioxidants (vitamins C and E, provided at the clinic) can also help.
The purpose of this step is to prevent further damage. The skin’s barrier is extremely fragile after sunburn and requires comprehensive protection.
🏖️ My three experiences with Genius after sunburn recovery
📆 First time: Last July – severe sunburn
Last July, when I went to Haeundae, I forgot to apply enough SPF 50 sunscreen (and didn’t reapply it). As a result, my shoulders, chest, and entire face turned red like cooked shrimp, and even the lightest touch caused pain.
That afternoon, I rushed to Genius Clinic. The director immediately said, “This is a second-degree sunburn; we can’t use any laser treatments today. Let’s start with the emergency treatment routine first.”
Results: By that evening, about 60% of the redness had gone away. The next day, although my skin was still slightly red, it no longer hurt. By the third day, it had mostly returned to its normal color (with only some peeling). Normally, such a sunburn would take a week to heal, but it took me only three days.
📆 Second time: This March – mild to moderate sunburn in spring
The sun in Busan in March was just as harsh! This time, I went fishing (don’t ask why a girl would fish…), and my face and arms got slightly red and hot. It wasn’t as serious as before, but I still went to Genius for a lighter version of the after-sunburn treatment (only steps two and three, skipping the more intense soothing step).
Cost: Around 80,000 Korean won (about 2,160 Taiwanese dollars), which is cheaper than the full treatment. Results: The redness disappeared by that evening, and the next day, my skin was even healthier than before (because it had been properly hydrated and nourished).
📆 Third time: This August – “preventive” maintenance
This time, I was smarter: I went to Genius before going to the beach for a “preventive enhancement treatment” (an enhanced version of the basic care routine plus high-concentration antioxidants) to ensure my skin was in its strongest condition before exposure to the sun.
Then I spent the whole day at the beach, and when I came back, my skin was still a bit red (it’s impossible to avoid getting sunburned at all), but it was much less severe than the previous two times. That night, I followed the standard three-step routine for after-sunburn care, and by the next day, my skin had completely recovered.
This made me realize that prevention is just as important as timely treatment.
